What Is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is when close objects look clear, but your vision becomes blurry at a distance. This is because the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Studies show myopia is becoming more common in kids, appearing earlier and progressing faster. But here’s the good news: early diagnosis and management can reduce risks. Together, we can help protect your kid’s eye health.

Why Early Management Matters: Slowing the Progression

Myopia management is all about taking proactive steps to slow the progression of nearsightedness. When left unchecked, worsening myopia increases the risk of serious eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment.

Our goal is simple: to slow the eyeball’s elongation, which worsens prescriptions and can weaken eye tissue over time. Managing myopia can help stabilize your child’s vision and reduce their long-term dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

At Family Eyecare of Scottsdale, we understand the importance of your child’s eye health. Glasses help correct blurry distance vision but don’t prevent it from worsening. We can provide proven, personalized myopia management options to meet your child’s unique needs.

MiSight 1 Day Contact Lenses

MiSight soft contact lenses are soft, daily disposable contact lenses. Like regular contacts, they can correct your child’s blurry vision, but MiSight lenses also have a special design that helps slow down myopia’s progression.

MiSight is the first FDA-approved soft contact lens specifically designed to manage myopia in children. These lenses offer comfort and convenience, making them ideal for kids to wear during any activity—whether playing sports or diving into a good book.

Ortho-k (Overnight Vision Correction)

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) involves wearing specially designed contact lenses only at night while your kid sleeps. These lenses gently reshape the eye’s front surface, so when your child wakes up, they can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.

Ortho-k is convenient for active kids who don’t want to worry about glasses or contacts during the day.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Multifocal lenses are soft contact lenses worn during the day, like MiSight. The lenses have different focus zones that correct vision and slow myopia progression. These zones refocus light inside the eye to reduce the signal that worsens myopia.

Multifocal contact lenses are a comfortable, convenient option for kids needing vision correction and myopia management in a single lens.

Early Detection Is Key: Introducing MYAH

At Family Eyecare of Scottsdale, we strive to implement technology to provide effective eye care for your child. That’s why we use the MYAH Optical Biometer and Corneal Topographer, a modern tool that helps us manage myopia effectively.

Think of the MYAH as a sophisticated camera that takes detailed measurements of your child’s eye. It measures the axial length, the distance from the front to the back of the eye. This measurement helps us understand how your child’s eye is growing and if their myopia is progressing.

Why Is Axial Length Important?

Monitoring Myopia Progression: As children grow, their eyes can lengthen, worsening myopia. Using the MYAH, we can track even small changes in axial length and intervene early to slow progression.

Assessing Treatment Success: Whether your child uses MiSight lenses, ortho-k, multifocal contacts, or atropine drops, the MYAH helps monitor how well the treatment works. If axial length increases too quickly, we can adjust the plan for improved results.

Besides measuring axial length, the MYAH also provides detailed information about the shape and curvature of the cornea, which is the eye’s clear front surface. This information is helpful for:

  • Fitting Contact Lenses: The MYAH helps us determine the perfect fit for contact lenses, especially for specialty lenses like ortho-k.
  • Detecting Other Eye Conditions: The MYAH can also help us identify other eye conditions that might affect your child’s vision.
